Lò Thị Chiêm from Mờn 1 village is cutting Guinea grass trialled in the Li-chăn project. She has collected 24 kilogrammes of grass in every four square metres, indicating a high yield. She is testing intercropping of Guinea grass, green elephant grass and Mulato grass on about 500 square metres. Currently, green elephant grass is proving most suited to the soil in Chiềng Lương commune and is highly productive. When the grass dies in the dry season, it's the time to harvest sugarcane, the tops of which are used to feed cattle.
Chiêm is raising four cows who need more grass than is produced by the 500 square metres. But sugarcane tops are abundant during its harvest (from early December to April).
