The buffalo festival

1973 - Needle painting

-----

In the north of Vietnam during the 1960s, agricultural production was organised following a cooperative model, in which caring for buffaloes is one of the most important tasks. Many competitions on the healthiest buffalo were organised, with teenagers being the key participants.

The painting evokes the bustling atmosphere of a buffalo festival where healthy buffalos are assembled in the large yard of a cooperative committee to have their health judged. The carers of the most beautiful and healthiest buffaloes will then be complimented and rewarded.
